Flo Milli was always smarter, better looking, funnier, and had more money you and her raps made you know it. The valley girl inflection her flow was always a fun experience; she wanted you to be clear on the fact she was annoyed that she had to time away from her spa day to address us peons (the yin to Pusha T’s sneering yang). It made her seem larger than life; a WWE villainess holding a pink spiked Barbie bat in the ring. While releasing good to great albums she seemed always unfairly outside of the conversation of the current hip-hop female vanguard. Her latest record, ‘Fine Hoe, Stay’ comes off her first certified hit, a floaty R&B leaning ‘Never Lose Me’ featuring Cardi B and SZA. So you can’t blame her for more mindful shift in a commercial direction.
As a result what we have is a pretty safe and boring record. Flo Milli is still operating at a high level but now its in service to middle of the lane trap beats and diminishing return r&b tracks like “Toast”. It’s not all bad, the Three Six Mafia sampling opener “Understand” comes out of the gate throwing chairs dedicated to fucking up the club. It also makes you miss past album bangers like, “Beef FloMix” and “Conceited”. Let Milli embrace the deserved career glow-up and hopefully her next record goes back to telling us off like the good old days.
